Idaho startup help that costs nothing

By Klark Sparks  ·  September 14, 2026  ·  6 min read

The short answer

The Idaho SBDC and SCORE provide free business advising, and regional economic development organisations across the state offer local support. They will help with plans, projections and market research at no cost — which is worth more to a funding search than another week of looking for lenders.

Part of our guide to funding a new business — what it is, what it costs, and who it suits.

Not sure this is the right product at all? The Idaho small business funding guide covers every option an Idaho business has.

We make nothing from this page. No referral fees, no arrangements, no relationships. It exists because a founder with a defensible business plan is a better borrower, and because most of the help below is genuinely free and genuinely under-used.

The Idaho SBDC

The Small Business Development Center network provides no-cost business advising, with regional centres across the state including eastern Idaho, the Treasure Valley, north Idaho and the Magic Valley.

What they are genuinely good at: working through financial projections, reviewing a business plan properly, market research, and explaining the mechanics of what lenders will ask for. An advisor who has seen hundreds of plans will find the weakness in yours faster than you will.

If you are preparing for SBA lending, this is the single most valuable free resource in the state.

SCORE

Volunteer mentoring from experienced business people, at no cost, with chapters serving Idaho. Different from SBDC in character — less technical, more counsel from someone who has run something.

Useful for the questions that are not financial: whether the idea makes sense, what you have not thought about, how someone else handled the same problem. Mentor quality varies with the individual, and you can ask for a different one.

Regional development organisations

Most Idaho regions have an economic development organisation, and they know their local market in ways no national resource does.

  • Eastern Idaho is served by Regional Economic Development for Eastern Idaho.
  • Kootenai County has the Coeur d’Alene Area Economic Development Corporation.
  • Bannock County has Bannock Development Corporation.
  • Madison County has Madison Economic Partners, with a stated focus on entrepreneurship.
  • Jerome County has Jerome 20/20.
  • Southern Idaho Economic Development covers the Magic Valley.
  • Blaine County has Sun Valley Economic Development.
  • The Lewis-Clark Valley has Valley Vision.

They will not lend you money. What they can do is tell you about local conditions, sites, workforce and occasionally programmes you would not otherwise hear about.

Your chamber of commerce

Membership costs something and is often worth it for a local business. Beyond networking, chambers are frequently the fastest route to finding a good local accountant, attorney or banker — which matters more than most founders expect.

One honest caution: most of this help is genuinely free, and there is an industry selling paid versions of the same thing. Before paying anyone for business plan help, grant searching or credit building, check whether the SBDC does it at no cost. Frequently they do.

Grants, realistically

Worth a brief honest word, because founders spend a great deal of time here for very little return. Grants for ordinary small businesses are rare, highly competitive, and usually targeted at specific industries, research activity or particular circumstances.

They are not a general funding source, and any service charging a fee to find grants for a typical small business is selling optimism. If your business genuinely fits a targeted programme, the SBDC will know about it.

What to do with all this

If you are three months from launching, book an SBDC appointment this week and take your projections. If you are earlier than that, talk to SCORE about whether the idea holds up.

Either conversation costs nothing and improves your funding prospects more than most of what you could otherwise do with the time.

Common questions

Is SBDC advising really free?
Advising is provided at no cost. Some workshops and training may carry a fee. It is funded to support small business formation, which is why it exists.
What is the difference between SBDC and SCORE?
SBDC advisors are professional staff and tend to be stronger on the technical side — projections, plans, lending mechanics. SCORE is volunteer mentoring from experienced business people and is better for judgement and perspective. Many founders use both.
Are there grants for starting a business in Idaho?
Rare for ordinary small businesses, and usually targeted at specific industries, research or circumstances. Treat grants as a bonus rather than a plan, and be wary of anyone charging to find them for you.
Why are you telling me about free help?
Because a founder with a defensible plan is a better borrower, and because we would rather be useful than only be useful when we are being paid. We earn nothing from anything on this page.
