Ada and Canyon Counties

Business funding in Star.

Star has grown by several hundred percent in two decades, from under two thousand people to well over ten thousand. It was incorporated only in 1997, which makes it a very young municipality next to its neighbours, and it straddles the Ada and Canyon county line — a detail with practical consequences most businesses discover late.

Star has no large employer base and does not pretend to. It is a fast-growing residential community whose residents commute to Boise, Meridian and Nampa, and whose business population is trades, local services and home-based professionals.

What Star does

  • Residential construction and building trades
  • Local retail, restaurants and personal services
  • Agriculture on the surrounding acreage
  • Home-based professional services
  • Trucking and contracting

The employer picture

Star has no large employer base of its own. Its residents commute, and its businesses are trades, local services and home-based professionals. That is the economic story here rather than a gap in it — and it shapes what kind of borrowing actually makes sense.

Where business happens

How Star businesses actually borrow.

A two-county business, whether you planned it or not

Star sits in both Ada and Canyon counties. Depending on where your premises land, you may deal with a different county for permitting, assessment and some licensing than a business a few streets away. It rarely changes whether financing is available, but it does affect timelines on anything involving property — worth knowing before you sign a lease or a purchase agreement.

More rooftops than storefronts

Star’s growth has been overwhelmingly residential. Commercial development along Highway 44 has not kept pace, so residents still drive to Eagle, Meridian or Middleton for a large share of ordinary services. The funding story here is small and specific: someone opening the first gym, clinic, coffee shop or salon in a market that has been exporting its spending for years.

The trades are the business base

With that much residential construction, framing, concrete, roofing, HVAC, electrical and landscaping firms make up a large share of Star’s businesses. They need equipment and they need to cover payroll between draws. Neither is complicated lending — it simply needs a lender comfortable with contractors, and not all of them are.

Equipment Financing

Trucks, trailers and trade equipment are the main hard assets in Star, and they finance against themselves.

Local organisations worth knowing

We are not affiliated with any of these and we get nothing for mentioning them. They are simply where a Star business owner can find support that has nothing to sell them.

Questions from Star owners.

Does being in two counties complicate financing?
Not the loan itself. It can affect anything touching property — permitting, assessment, some licensing — so confirm which county your address falls in before committing to premises. Lenders will ask, and the answer occasionally affects timing.
There is not much commercial space in Star. Can I finance a build instead?
Sometimes, though ground-up construction is a different and more demanding product than leasehold build-out, with draw schedules, appraisals and usually a larger equity requirement. If you own or can acquire the land, owner-occupied construction through SBA 504 is worth examining.
I run my business from home. Does that disqualify me?
No. A great many Star businesses are home-based and they borrow routinely — for equipment, vehicles and working capital. It affects some real-estate-linked products, but not the majority of what a growing service business actually needs.
